One of the Best Travel Credit Cards: American Express Delta Gold SkyMiles®

If you travel more than the average bear such as a successful business person or serial vacationer, you might as well get rewarded on all the money you’re spending on plane tickets and other travel expenses? Right?

Just as important as being rewarded (or possibly more important) is ensuring your travel experience is as easy and manageable as possible. That being said, if you want to start getting rewarded for your travel while making your experience easier, then the American Express Delta Gold SkyMiles® Credit Card at might be just what you’re looking for.

The American Express Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card has some really great benefits. There are a couple of drawbacks as well so it’s important to know your options. You’ll want to recognize how the credit card can benefit you, not just the various benefits it carries.

The Pros

Earn 60,000 Bonus Miles

Just for signing up for the card, you’ll receive 60,000 bonus miles after you make $2,000 in purchases on your new card within your first 3 months and a $50 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new card within your first 3 months. 60,000 miles is approximately one domestic round trip ticket.

Earn $2 Per Mile on Delta Purchases

You will earn 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases made with your card and 1 mile per dollar on all other purchases you make with your card. So, if you have 10,000 miles from Delta purchases, you have $200 in rewards but if it’s 10,000 miles from non-Delta purchases, you have $100 in rewards. A penny per mile is the benchmark for non-Delta purchases and 2 pennies per mile for Delta purchases.

Pay for your Travel with Miles

Earn 1 mile per dollar for purchases you make with your Card. This can be anything from every day expenses like gas, groceries, and restaurants, to monthly purchases like your phone bill. Miles are redeemable toward travel on Delta and their 19 airline partners. There’s also no limit to how much you can earn.

First Bag Checked Free

I don’t know about you but it seems like every time I fly I’m spending approximately $50 – $100 per trip (unless it’s Southwest) in checking my bags alone. However, as an American Express Delta Gold SkyMiles® Credit Card holder, your first checked bag flies free on Delta flights and that includes your travel companions’ first checked bag as well. This can save you up to $240 per round trip for a family of four.

Priority Boarding

Nowadays, it seems like I’m checking my bag at the gate more and more since the overhead bin space fills up so fast. However, with the American Express Delta Gold SkyMiles® you will have Main Cabin 1 Priority Boarding on Delta flights so you can stow your bag and settle in sooner.

In Flight Savings

You’ll receive a 20% savings in the form of a statement credit after you use your Card on Delta in-flight purchases such as food, beverages, and audio headsets. Save money while earning free travel!

Exclusive Savings at Delta Sky Club

You and up to two traveling companions can enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages, Wi-Fi access, Satellite TV, newspapers and magazines, personalized flight assistance, private restrooms and more. However, there is a fee of $29 per person.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

No matter where you’re traveling, when you use your Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card there are no Foreign Transaction Fees from American Express.

The Cons

Annual Fee

You will be charged $95 per year to use this card. If you don’t plan on traveling with Delta two or more times per yer, it’s not going to benefit you more than it’s worth.

Delta Airlines Only

This card is geared toward the traveler that uses Delta airlines exclusively. You will not receive rewards for traveling with other airlines. However, the miles can be used toward Delta’s airline partners.

Only Earn 1 Mile Per Dollar Spent on Non-Delta Purchases

You will earn 2x the points when using your card on Delta purchases but the rewards are cut in half when using the card on all other non-Delta related purchases.

The Bottom Line

If you travel frequently and plan on flying exclusively with Delta since they are the best airline out there, then this card could really serve you well by earning you free travel and making your overall travel experience easier. However, if you don’t plan on traveling exclusively with Delta (at least two to three times per year) I would suggest finding a different travel rewards credit card.

We hope you enjoyed this review and will find it helpful when deciding which travel rewards credit card is right for you!
