Gardein Review

Even though I’m a vegetarian I still crave the flavors and textures of meat from time to time, which is easy to fulfill since there are about a zillion different vegetarian and vegan meat alternatives on the market today. However, not all vegan meat products are created equally. There are a lot of hits and seemingly less misses as the competition grows in the industry. But time after time, Gardein seems to always come through with their freakishly meat-like products when it comes to flavor and texture. This Gardein review will give you a run down of what I love and hate (but mostly love) to help guide you towards the best purchase sure to make your taste buds happy.

The Many Benefits of Gardein Products

  1. Endless variety of products, flavors and textures
  2. MOST Gardein products are freakishly meat-like
  3. Healthier than meat
  4. Supports a more sustainable planet
  5. A healthy and tasty meal option for picky kids and toddlers

The Two Negatives of Gardein Products

  1. Small portions – Many of the meals only contain enough for 2 or 3 people
  2. Expensive

Gardein Review: Homestyle Meatless Meatloaf

gardein meatless homestyle meatloaf

Meatless meatloaf doesn’t exactly sound tasty but I was surprised at how much it actually tasted like meatloaf and not like a vegetarian lentil loaf or something like that. The gravy is also rich and delicious. It’s not something I would buy all the time but if I’m craving meatloaf on rare occasions, this product is will fulfill your meatloaf cravings for sure. It also takes great if you put it between two buns with some mayo!

Gardein Review: Crabless Cakes

crabless cakes

These weren’t my favorite. The breading is good, it’s nice a crispy but the inside is a bit soggy and doesn’t exactly have the texture of crab. They have a tiny hint of crab flavor but not much. I tried these with a sweet chili sauce which did pair well with the flavors.

Gardein Review: Chick’n Scallopini

gardein chick'n scallopini

The Chick’n Scallopini was OK. It needed some kind of sauce (like a gravy) to liven it up or another good idea would be to saute it with some mushrooms, onions, garlic, and marsala wine. OR you could make a chicken parmesan by lightly breading it, frying it in a pan with some oil and topping it with your favorite marinara sauce, and Mozzarella/Parmesan cheese. Eating it by itself just doesn’t cut it. It does have a good texture though, it looks and tastes like chicken. This one has particular cooking instructions so you want to follow them carefully to avoid it being too dry.

Gardein Review: Beefless Tips

gardein beefless tips

The beefless tips look shockingly like real beef and also have a very similar flavor to beef. However, they aren’t chewy like beef and are mush softer in texture. What’s nice about these are you can season them however you want and are versatile. I really like these in an asian style stir fry with veggies and a ginger soy sauce over a bed of rice or in steak tacos…YUM! They don’t come with any sauce so I always make sure I have some sort of sauce that pairs well with them.

Gardein Review: Chipotle Black Bean Burger

gardein chipotle black bean burger

The chipotle black bean burger is very similar to the Morning Star brand spicy black bean burger but a little more hefty. They taste just like black beans with a hint of chipotle flavoring. The texture is that of a rare burger if cooked correctly. Be careful when cooking these because it they go too long they dry up and are virtually non-edible. Always follow the cooking instructions closely.

Gardein Review: Ultimate Beefless Grounds

gardein ultimate beefless grounds

I absolutely LOVE the Ultimate Beefless Grounds. I make some killer vegan sloppy joes and enchiladas with these bad boys. They have almost the exact texture as ground beef just slightly mushier but not really in bad way. They take on the flavors of whatever you are cooking them with very well. They are already seasoned so it’s pretty easy to get a lot of flavor out of these when you add other seasonings and sauces to it.

Gardein Review: Mandarin Orange crispy Chick’n

Gardein mandarin orange crispy chick'n

I literally crave the Gardein Mandarin Orange Crispy Chick’n all the time. It is so rich, filling, and flavorful. They give you lots of sauce, which I love since it’s absolutely delicious. Be careful when you cook these because they can burn easily in the skillet, so you have to babysit them. I also made the mistake once of putting the sauce into the skillet near the end of the cooking process which burned the sauce and make it bitter. So, again, just be sure to follow the cooking instructions carefully.

Gardein Review: Meatless Meatballs

gardein meatless meatballs

The Meatless Meatballs have so many amazing spices and flavor. They taste like a super flavorful real meatball. The texture is quite a bit mushier than a real beef and turkey meatball. They also aren’t as juicy as a real meatball, but other than that these vegan meatballs rock. I use them with Grandma Sharon’s homemade spaghetti all the time.

Gardein Review: Fishless Filets

gardein fishless filets

The batter on these is really good. You can tell they really tried to replicate fish, however that is almost impossible to do. It has the “layers” that most fish has, however, it isn’t exactly light and flaky like fish but slightly more dense and mushy. They do have a fishy flavor but the texture is just off.

Gardein Review: Chipotle Lime Crispy Fingers

gardein chipotle lime crispy fingers

The Gardein Chipotle Lime Crispy Fingers were pretty good. However, I don’t buy them often since I prefer the 7 grain crispy tenders better. The chipotle lime fingers are pretty spicy and a little too big in my opinion but they are flavorful and do have the taste and texture of real chicken.

Gardein Review: Teriyaki Chick’n Strips

gardein teriyaki chick'n strips

I didn’t like the texture on these…they were kind of a tough and rubbery without much flavor. They sort of had a “fake meat” taste which really surprised me because most of their other chick’n products are spot on it flavor and texture such as the 7 grain crispy tenders, the chick’n sandwich and the mandarin orange chick’n.

Gardein Review: 7 Grain Crispy Tenders

gardein 7 grain crispy tenders

Not only to I love the Gardein 7 Grain Crispy Tenders but so does my meat loving hubby and my super picky 18 month old. The breading is simple yet delicious. The texture is exactly that of chicken. The taste of these tenders remind me of super high quality organic real chicken. They taste great in just about any dip. My favorites are sweet chili sauce but ketchup and BBQ are in close second. The ONLY negative of these is parts of the breading sometimes come of while they are baking.

Gardein Review: Sizzling Szechuan Beefless Strips

gardein sizzling szechuan beefless strips

These Szechuan Beefless Strips remind me a lot of your typical Chinese takeout dish but fresher! The sauce has a soy/BBQ/sweet/savory combination, which I LOVE. You can tell that they are a wheat gluten base by the chewiness of them. The outside is is nice and crispy. They are a bit oily when you cook them in a pan so I recommend baking them in the oven if you prefer less oil. These go great alongside some rice and broccoli and mix it all together…YUM!

Gardein Review: Sweet and Tangy BBQ Wings

gardein meatless bbq chick'n wings

The Sweet and Tangy BBQ Wings are good but they don’t really remind me of wings. They are softer and mushier than wings. They have a similar flavor to real wings but without the gross bones and tendons…yuck!  I’m a BBQ sauce fan girl so these are right of my alley. Another great plus is they are low carb. You could even deep fry them if you wanted more a of a true wing experience. Otherwise these are more like mini boneless, skinless chicken breasts with bbq sauce.

Gardein Review: Sliders: Chick’n and Beef

crabless cakes

Both the crispy chick’n and the ultimate beef sliders are made with the same ingredients as the regular size of each but these are mini versions and they come with the bun on them. I love these mini sliders! They come with the bun and everything so I recommend cooking just the patty in the pan and then adding the bun to the pan when the patty is almost finished. I tried these in the microwave once and I made the mistake of cooking both patty and bun for the same amount of time and the bun dried up and was virtually non-edible. These are OK by themselves but I highly recommend adding your favorite burger toppings and condiments to them.
